System Updates
The tasks of an SAP Basis administrator are management and administration of SAP systems. In practice, it means taking responsibility for the maintenance environment of the systems, their cooperation, updating, solving user problems and efficiency issues (concerning the network, databases or operating systems), backup copies and architecture. Another task of this position is also to follow new market trends and propose compliant solutions with them.

The Precalculation Server is a standalone application that allows you to generate and distribute Excel workbooks based on SAP BI data. Are you already using the Precalculation Server or would you like to take advantage of it in the future? I would be happy to explain the steps from installing the Precalculation Server to finally starting the instances on the target system so that you can use the Precalculation Server for your purposes. As a reader of our blog, you are certainly interested in tricks and tricks that will make your SAP system easier to handle. You may be familiar with the situation where you want to install a Precalculation Server yourself. Here you will learn how this task can be implemented in the SAP environment. Prerequisites For example, you need a Windows 7 or a Windows Server 2012 instance on which the Precalculation Server is installed to operate the Precalculation Server. Both 32 and 64-bit versions can be used. In addition, the machine requires a .NET installation to run the Precalculation Server in addition to a Microsoft Excel installation (32-bit version is essential). Download the installation files In advance, you should download the latest installation files from the official SAP website to the target computers. Cleanup Phase If you already have an existing installation on the system, the first thing you need to do is uninstall all items to use a clean host for the Precalculation Server. You can do this by calling the Windows Control Panel: The order must be followed according to the SAP documentation. Therefore, apply the following procedure for uninstallation, no installation of SAP should be visible anymore: Order: 1) SAP BW Precalculation Service 2) SAP Business Explorer 3) SAP GUI for Windows XY Note: During the installation and uninstallation of individual components, the progress bar status may be suspended at certain locations. This is not a cause for concern, but a normal behaviour. Often, it will stand at 92% or 95% for about 10 minutes.

Many companies are struggling with the introduction and use of secinfo and reginfo files to secure SAP RFC gateways. We have developed a generator that supports the creation of the files. This blog post lists two SAP best practices for creating the secinfo and reginfo files to enhance the security of your SAP gateway and how the generator helps you do this. secinfo and reginfo Request generator Option 1: Restrictive procedure In the case of the restrictive solution approach, only in-system programmes are allowed. Therefore, external programmes cannot be used. However, since this is desired, the access control lists must be gradually expanded to include each programme required. Although this procedure is very restrictive, which speaks for safety, it has the very great disadvantage that, in the creation phase, links which are actually desired are always blocked. In addition, the permanent manual activation of individual connections represents a continuous effort. For large system landscapes, this procedure is very complex. Option 2: Logging-based approach An alternative to the restrictive procedure is the logging-based approach. To do this, all connections must be allowed first by the secinfo file containing the content USER=* HOST=* TP=* and the reginfo file contains the content TP=*. During the activation of all connections, a recording of all external programme calls and system registrations is made with the gateway logging. The generated log files can then be evaluated and the access control lists created. However, there is also a great deal of work involved here. Especially with large system landscapes, many external programmes are registered and executed, which can result in very large log files. Revising them and creating access control lists can be an unmanageable task. However, this process does not block any intentional connections during the compilation phase, which ensures the system will run non-disruptively.

There is no way around containers, and even SAP will soon have to reorient itself here and allow the NetWeaver stack to be run in containers. There are many indications that Kubernetes will win the battle for supremacy among container management tools. SAP has also already invested in Gardener and is also intensifying its partnerships with IBM and Red Hat Openshift.

Use "Shortcut for SAP Systems" to accomplish many tasks in the SAP basis more easily and quickly.

SAP Basis refers to all transactions, programs and objects that control the functions of the overall system.

The tasks of a company's own SAP Basis department are undergoing enormous change at many companies, as SAP is also relying more and more on cloud services.
