The database layer manages all data in the R/3 System. It contains the database management system (DBMS) and the actual data.
SAP Basis is also known as module BC or application Basis. In this regard, SAP Basis refers to all transactions, programs and objects that control the functions of the overall system. This includes, among other things, user and authorization management as well as the configuration of interfaces via RFC.
ESTABLISHING A SAP INNOVATION TEAM
The definition, organisational structure as well as the naming of the SAP basis is historically conditioned by previous SAP software versions and components. This also results in the perception of the SAP basis and the related focus of the SAP NetWeaver and the ABAP system core, which is still widely used today. However, the scope of activities has changed significantly in terms of tasks and technology and will continue to change in view of SAP's perspective and product strategy and the changing roles of IT. In order to accommodate this change and to change perceptions both in the overall context of the SAP ecosystem and within its own company, the SAP basis must develop a new self-understanding and establish a marketing for the publication of its own performance. This is where all the system's data resides. These are composed of the actual database and the DBMS, the "database management system". In earlier versions, the database here came from different manufacturers. For example, Microsoft SQL or Oracle. Since SAP HANA, a lot has changed for IT in this data layer. This is because the database comes from SAP itself and is automatically monitored by the system. There is more to this database layer than just the working data. Important elements such as the configuration tables and system data for control and application content are also stored here. This is the repository data used by applications.
